The first pitches had the shape of an hourglass and in 1875 the pitch got the shape we all know today. Wooden balls were replaced by those made of hair, wool, bran, or cork tied with rope and wrapped in cloth or leather, and with the invention of vulcanized rubber, the first rubber balls appeared. Instead of grass, the tennis surface was covered with clay and concrete. Did you know that the name tennis comes from the French word “tenez”, which can be translated as “to hold” “to receive”, or “to catch”. Tennis is a very popular sport in the region, where some of the most famous tennis players are from.
